Background:
The massive explosion and subsequent destruction and fires that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4th, 2020, have shown the world the role and importance of the Lebanese Civil Defense (LCD) during and after a disaster. The LCD is a volunteer force of highly-trained individuals who provide a variety of services, including: fighting domestic, industrial and forest fires, search and rescue efforts in support of survivors of accident and disasters, providing first aid to the injured, responding to vehicular accidents and providing rescue at sea, the LCD is the organization that will be the first to provide support during times of emergency in Lebanon.
Ten of LCD’s First Responders made the ultimate sacrifice when they were the first on the scene of the port explosion, arriving before the second, larger blast. The LCD volunteers have worked around the clock performing search and rescue efforts to find survivors in the Beirut-blast rubble.
